The Hindu- How giving just one day a year can make an impact on their lives

Volunteers from IT major Sapient a global services company spent quality time on Friday with students at the Spastics Society of Karnataka here.

Some 25 of them engaged the youngsters in various activities and workshops on dance, sports, music, and art-and-craft sessions.

The initiative is a part of Sapient's global CSR (corporate social responsibility) programme, Sapient Gives Back, which requires employees to volunteer one day each year toward social work.

“With over 9,000 employees around the world donating just a day of their time, we can make a big impact with little effort,” said Suja Matthew, head of management hiring. “This year we've focused on children and education. In April, we paired up with Aashayein, an NGO that works on sponsoring education for children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. And in May, we worked with the families of housekeeping staff, giving the entire family medical check-ups and engaging children in painting, or dancing competitions, or having learning sessions about hygiene and the environmental issues. Our next venture might look at identifying a school that needs assistance and adopting it.”

“At Spastic Society, we want our students to become independent,” said Vice Principal Padma Janardhanan, whose son's challenges brought her here 27 years ago as a parent. “We are more than a community here; we're a family. In the 20 years I've been part of this facility, I have watched it grow into a unique initiative, which provides all its students with education, medical care, love, and acceptance.”

The school, with 350 students and 100 staff, runs from Monday to Friday. It welcomes volunteers who undergo brief orientation sessions, to assist in regular classes, or to come Saturdays to tutor students. Visitors are welcome any Friday of the month.
