Cancer Schmancer is a movement started by Fran Drescher based off her own experience as a cancer survivor. Although Fran Drescher is probably best known for her rise to fame on The Nanny, her life changed when she began to feel ill and was unable to find a doctor willing to screen her for cancer. Fran was persistent, and after 8 doctors and 2 years of misdiagnoses, her worst fears were confirmed in a biopsy – she had uterine cancer. Thankfully, Fran’s cancer was only in its early stages, and with proper treatment, she is now cancer free.
Fran’s personal story only highlights a fact that very few people know – cancer is 95% curable when caught in Stage I. While the overwhelming majority of government funding goes to research for finding a cure, Cancer Schmancer seeks to raise awareness of the potential for cancer survival through prevention and screening. The movement seeks to empower women to take control of their bodies and become medical consumers, demanding screenings when they know they are sick or at risk.
It seems only fitting that our work with Cancer Schmancer, even in its early stages, is showing so much promise. Our goal is not only to educate, but to activate a movement for cancer prevention and screenings on a mass scale. Rather than focusing on traditional celebrity PSA’s for fundraising, SapientNitro is working to create a grassroots campaign through online social networks.
