| The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) wanted to develop an electronic publishing model to support the university’s mission: Advancing knowledge and educating students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. |
Together, Sapient and MIT designed and developed MIT OpenCourseWare (MIT-OCW), a revolutionary, web-based publishing initiative that provides free, searchable access to nearly all of the university’s undergraduate and graduate course material to anyone around the world. And, within just a few weeks of launching the site, MIT-OCW received visitors from nearly every country on the planet.
The impact this solution has had regarding the accessibility of learning materials is tremendous. "We have had thousands and thousands of e-mails from people describing how OpenCourseWare is going to change their lives," said Anne Marguiles, executive director of MIT-OCW.
With our adaptable solution, educators, students, and self-learners can easily access and adapt significant amounts of course materials, such as lecture notes, problem sets, streaming video, multimedia simulations, exams, and reading lists.
To make this vision a reality, we provided MIT with strategy, program management, technology design and implementation, and content migration services. Additionally, MIT used our application management services capability to provide round-the-clock e-mail and customer-service support for MIT-OCW.
The MIT-OCW system provides a scalable base for managing up to one million resources and enables open access to the course materials from virtually all of MIT’s 2,500 courses. The ocw.mit.edu site is used by hundreds of thousands of users worldwide and handles millions of page views per month.
Not only does MIT-OCW represent a major innovation in how educational content is disseminated, but it is also one of the largest Microsoft content-management systems ever deployed. The supporting technology infrastructure was designed using Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 and .NET technologies.
Following launch, MIT-OCW was named the best application of IT in the field of education by the Computerworld Honors Foundation. The nomination, which came from Microsoft’s Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates, was based on the originality of the program's conception, the breadth of its vision, and the significance of its benefit to society.
Additional recognition for the program and Sapient's involvement includes an InfoWorld 100 Award; a Microsoft Internet Business Solution of the Year Award, and two Massachusetts Interactive Media Council (MIMC) awards as the winner of the Education Institution and Best User Experience categories.
